This day, on December 1, 1920, Simeon Furman was born in Pinsk; the Soviet chess player and chess theorist; International grandmaster (1966). Honoured trainer of USSR (1973); trainer of A. Karpov (1969 - 78), of the combined team of USSR at the Olympiad of 1974 at the European championship 1977. The best results in the championships of Leningrad: 1953 - the 1st place; 1954 - the 1st - 3rd; 1957 - the 1st - 2nd; 1947, 1950, 1955 - the 3rd - 4th place. A champion of the voluntary sports committee "Spartak" (1960). A participant of 13 championships of USSR; the best results: 1948 - the 3rd place; 1949 - the 5th - 7th, 1965 - the 4th - 5th place. In the structure of the team of Leningrad a winner of the team championships of USSR (1953 and 1960). A participant of the championship of Europe (1961), of the matches of USSR - Yugoslavia (1957) and Leningrad - Budapest (1957 - 1962). The best results in the International tournaments: Garrakhov (1966) and Polyanitsa-Zdrui (1967) - the 1st place; Madrid (1973) - the 3rd place; Portorozh - Ljubljana (1975) - the 3rd - 5th; Bad-Lauterberg (1977) - the 3rd place.
Simeon Abramovich Furman made a valuable contribution in the development of the theory of openings - Gryunfeld and Nimtsovich defence, Spanish game, Queen gambit and other openings. Since 1982 the Furman memorials are being conducted.
